Editors who work in area studies, foreign language learning materials production or nongovernmental organizations frequently encounter the challenge of editing translations from less commonly taught foreign languages. This session will discuss some of the unique challenges that this entails, and it will focus on strategies for successfully working with this material. Specific topics will include determining style and special considerations for style sheets, deciding on process requirements, querying translators who have poor English skills, maintaining cultural sensitivity and objectivity, balancing accuracy and idiomatic English style, and fact checking.
