Niggles, Nudges and Uh-Oh Sensors: The Intuitive Art of Catching Errors

Part of being a good copy editor is having a finely calibrated sense of when something seems "off." That uh-oh sensor might be triggered by institutional knowledge, long familiarity with a region or a beat, personal knowledge from a hobby, persistent curiosity, something unidentifiable or just plain luck. We'll talk about errors we've caught through the prompting of a nudge, ones we've missed, how to develop and strengthen that editor's intuition, and how to find answers and fact-check without spending too much time going down the rabbit hole.
