Copy editors are tasked with cleaning copy, following style, making sense of stories and generally ensuring that stories meet the highest legal. On top of that, many news organizations and publications expect copy editors to enforce ethics guidelines, while other companies do not. As desks shrink and less help is available, here's what the ethically inclined editor can, and should, do alone.

Rick Kenney

Professor, Georgia Regents University
Rick Kenney is a professor and chair in the Communications department at Georgia Regents University. He has led sessions on editing ethics at ACES conventions six times. A former Dow Jones Newspaper Fund director, he wrote the 50-year history of the Fund in 2009. As a sports copy editor, he handled every piece of copy in the hometown paper at the 2014 Masters Tournament.
