Covering crime is a core function of many news outlets, both in print and online. But when journalists who are supposed to be watchdogs for the public interest get so much of the information they report directly from police, what issues does that raise? This session will examine common problems in crime coverage that can hinder clarity, allow an uncritical acceptance of police talking points and even create legal dangers for journalists and their employers. The session will also be useful for non-journalists who edit copy from the police or military.
